IT HAS not taken the Blackwater Basilisks long to recover from their Round 1 loss in the Central Queensland Rugby Union competition, putting together two impressive wins to surge up the ladder.
The Basilisks recovered from a half-time deficit for the second week in a row to storm to a 39-29 victory over a previously undefeated and highly fancied Colts outfit.
Basilisks coach Allan Hannah has been very happy with his players’ refusal to lie down in tough situations.
“We’ve got this don’t-give-up attitude,” Hannah said.
“The most important thing is if everyone gives 110%.”
But the 14-7 score-line at the break left Hannah slightly disappointed with the team’s mental lapse.
“We seemed to switch off a bit,” he said.
“The boys had a good talking to at half time.”
The Basilisks produced an irresistible second half though, with veteran Grant Collins kicking six goals from seven attempts.
Hannah said it was a simple game plan that was paying dividends for them.
“We’ve just been patient,” he said.
“We’ve gone back to basics.”
The Basilisks have exceeded Hannah’s expectations so far this season.
“I’m very surprised actually,” he said.
“Our main thing this year was just to be competitive.
“We’re ahead of where I thought we would be.
“Everyone is starting to gel,” Hannah said.
While he has enjoyed the two wins from three games, Hannah is keeping his feet on the ground.
“We’re not getting too carried away,” he said.
“I think the competition is pretty close.”
